Cities100 is filled to the brim with successful solutions showing that cities are taking action on climate change on a global scale. Regardless of wealth or resources, size or location, cities around the world are learning from one another, adapting global best practices to fit local circumstances, and demonstrating that we have the power to take action to build a smarter, more resilient, and resource-efficient world. In the lead up to COP21 this publication is igniting hope that results are possible and action is happening. We hope it will inspire the political discussions.

Selection Process

The Cities100 publication highlights cities that have implemented outstanding projects, programmes, policies and practices to combat climate change and reduce climate risks. The application process for the Cities100 was conducted together with the C40 Cities Awards. All details about the application process can be found in the Application Guide .

Each application for the Cities100 is evaluated by the C40 and Sustainia urban professionals. Please read the Terms and Conditions for applying for the C40 Cities Awards and the Cities100.

All applicants for Cities100 and C40 Cities Awards will be notified about the selection of projects in the first week of October.


The solutions highlighted in the Cities100 are divided into 10 sectors:

Mayors continue to deliver important, innovative policies and programmes that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve resiliency. Launched in 2013, the formally known City Climate Leadership Awards were created to recognise those successes, catalyze ambition, and share best practices with cities around the world. The 2015 newly named C40 Cities Awards took place on the evening of December 3rd 2015 in Paris. to coincide the activities around COP21, and aimed to share highly replicable ‘best practices’ across cities and draw attention to outstanding performances that have achieved a high level of environmental success in a challenging context.
