For Nurses who have a Bachelor’s or Higher Degree

The PhD program is designed to prepare visionary scholars with expertise in conducting research to improve the health of culturally diverse populations, especially in Hawai’i and the Pacific Basin regions and countries. The curriculum will establish a strong foundation in research methodologies with each course linked to previous and subsequent courses contributing to the development of the dissertation study.

The full time on campus cohort model program of study is rigorous and requires students demonstrate strong critical thinking and writing skills that allow them to coherently and logically communicate their course assignments, and ultimately, their dissertation. The program will enroll post baccalaureate and higher degree students.

PhD Degree Entry Pathways

Students can enter the PhD program through one of these pathways.

  • RN with a bachelor’s degree in nursing
  • Graduate Entry Program in Nursing – Non-nurses with a non-nursing bachelor’s degree
  • RNs with an associate degree in nursing and a bachelor’s degree in a health-related field
  • RNs with a master’s degree

Program Outcomes

Students completing the PhD degree in Nursing will demonstrate the ability to conduct original publishable research, ability to communicate to various audiences, conduct research in an ethical manner, integrate and apply key concepts, information, and methods into their work. The program will graduate nurse scholars capable of leading and functioning on scientific teams addressing complex health concerns.

Partnership in the Nursing Education Exchange

University of Hawai’i at Mānoa is a member of NEXus (The Nursing Education Exchange). NEXus is a collaboration between participating doctoral programs in nursing that allows doctoral students enrolled at member colleges and universities to take courses that may not be offered at his/her home institution for a common tuition price. Students may fulfill requirements by enrolling in NEXus courses.
