Year 1 of the programme consists of 5 modules. Students learn about key influences in graphic design and use this knowledge to influence their own work. Image making and typography are an integral part of the first year and practical training sessions allow students to realise their ideas using industry standard software.
Modules: Image Making, Typography, Idea Generation, Contextual and Cultural Studies 1, Digital Design Technology 1
Year 2 of the programme consists of 5 modules. Students learn new skills while building on the core learning from Year 1. Year 2 places more emphasis on the digital environment and allows students to concentrate on a number of subfields such as Web Design, Editorial Design and Photography. By the end of Year 2 students achieve a deeper knowledge and understanding of the core principles of graphic design and are in a position to progress to more self-led, innovative projects.

The focus of the Year 3 programme is on professional practice and self-led learning with the completion of a major design project. This year gives students an understanding of what is expected from professional design practice while allowing them focus on an area of personal interest through selecting their own major project subject. On completion of Year 3 students are able to demonstrate initiative and autonomy through a range of original design solutions, and are ready to engage with industry in an independent and knowledgeable manner.
On successful completion of the BA Graphic Design students have a strong portfolio of creative, original design work, which shows their varied skill set and demonstrates ability to communicate visually.

Standard applicants (School leavers under 23yrs old) require 2 honours subjects and 4 pass subjects in the Leaving Certificate, or equivalent school leaver exam. Standard applicants are also required to submit a portfolio of work for assessment as part of the application process. Please see the Standard Applicants page for application guidelines.
Applications are accepted from non-standard applicants (e.g. mature learners over 23yrs old with or without a relevant qualification, school leavers who do not meet the minimum Leaving Certificate or portfolio requirement). Please see the Non-Standard applicants page for application guidelines.
On successful completion, learners are awarded the QQI BA Graphic Design. This award is a Level 7 qualification.
QQI is the state Higher Education awarding body.
