South Carolina is one of the oldest states in the country and is known for its historically rich fine arts and Southern culture. Manufacturing, agriculture, health care,and tourism are some of the top industries in the state.

The largest city and capital is the city of Columbia. However, the Greenville metropolitan area is the largest metropolitan area, containing cities like Anderson and Mauldin.

Engineering Education in South Carolina

Engineering professions are found across different economic sectors. Governments need civil engineers to aid with public works projects. Pharmaceutical and chemical companies need biomedical and chemical engineers to create products. Manufacturing companies need materials, mechanical, and electrical engineers to help in the creation of machines and manufacturing systems.

For associate’s and certificate degrees in engineering, students in South Carolina can attend fifteen community and technical colleges, such as Trident Technical College in Charleston.

For bachelor’s degrees in engineering, students can attend six public universities in South Carolina, including the University of South Carolina, South Carolina State University, Clemson University, and the Citadel, the Military College of South Carolina, which is a public university for military cadets who are pursuing bachelor’s degrees.

South Carolina also has four private universities offering engineering bachelor’s programs: Furman University, Claflin University, Benedict College, and Anderson University.

The University of South Carolina, Clemson University, and the Citadel have graduate programs in engineering as well.

Outlook of Engineering Jobs in South Carolina

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) states that there are 36,110 total engineers in South Carolina, with an average annual salary calculated to $70,990.

Some of the engineering fields the BLS listed include civil engineers, who earn $75,130 a year with 5,150 employed in the state. Another engineering field includes chemical engineers, who earn $89,110 with 930 workers employed. Another example are mechanical engineers, who earn $85,100 a year with 5,860 employed in the state.
